The UK’s Best Lawn Sprinklers For Hassle-Free Garden Watering

Written by April Foot

Lawn sprinklers can keep your lawn looking green and healthy, with minimal time and effort on your part.

Not only do they make your life easier, but sprinkler kits can allow you to conserve water, by distributing it evenly across your lawn. If you don’t fancy installing an underground sprinkler system, a simple device that fits onto the end of your hosepipe could be the answer – and won’t break the bank.

These time-saving units can be attached to your water source via a hose connector. When the water is turned on, it will be pushed out through the nozzles, and spray over your garden. Most sprinklers have adjustable nozzles, so you can alter the angle and reach of the water.

If you’re looking for a new sprinkler system to keep your grass looking great, take a look at our list of the best lawn sprinklers on the market.

We’ve based our selection on their reach, adjustability, and value for money.

Best Pick: Costwise Metal Base Bar Sprinkler

Our favourite lawn sprinkler is durable, user-friendly and has a large range, making it perfect for bigger gardens

Topping our list of the best lawn sprinklers is this Metal Base Bar Sprinkler by Costwise, thanks to its large coverage area, adjustability and robust design.

This sprinkler is advertised as being able to cover an impressive maximum area of 385 square metres (depending on your water pressure), making it ideal for watering larger lawns. It provides this coverage in a useful rectangular shape.

It’s easy to adjust the nozzles, and you can alter the spray width on each side of the sprinkler, to suit your needs. There’s also a flow control knob, which allows you to easily lower the water flow. A built-in filter helps prevent blockages, and if you do experience a problem, the nozzles are easy to clean.

The sprinkler is compatible with most standard hose connectors, including Hozelock fittings. It has a durable metal base, which gives it greater weight and stability compared to many plastic models, and helps it to withstand the elements. However, there are still some parts made from plastic, which could be vulnerable to damage.

Overall, this is a high-quality and robust sprinkler, that should last you for many seasons. It is also our most expensive lawn sprinkler – but this is to be expected, considering the durable design, and the range of spray on offer, and it’s still cheaper than many on the market.

Pros

  • Robust metal base for stability and durability.
  • Fully adjustable, easy to alter the water flow and coverage.
  • Inlet filter helps prevent blockages in the nozzles.
  • Can cover an impressive 385 square metres (water pressure dependant).
  • Perfect for larger lawns.

Cons

  • Our most expensive lawn sprinkler.
  • Doesn’t fare well with low water pressures.
  • Plastic adjuster knobs could be easily damaged.

Value Pick: Wisdom Automatic Garden Sprinkler

Our best value lawn sprinkler offers 360° watering at an adjustable angle, for an unbelievably low price

Perhaps you want to try out using a lawn sprinkler, before making quite such a big investment? In which case, this super low-priced Wisdom Automatic Garden Sprinkler might be of interest.

The 3 adjustable arms on this one rotate 360°, for excellent coverage over your lawn. The spray diameter can reach up to 10m, with a standard water pressure of 2.5bar. Whilst this might not be as much as some, it should be plenty for a small lawn. You could also move the unit around, or connect up multiple sprinklers, if required.

Each arm has 4 nozzles, and you can adjust the spray angle of each nozzle from 15° to 45°, offering you greater flexibility over the reach and direction of water. Bear in mind that the water pressure should not exceed 4 bar, as this can cause the product to leak.

The device is compatible with most standard hose connectors, although there isn’t one included. The body is made from ABS plastic, which is durable, but not quite as sturdy or robust as metal.

However, considering the quite incredibly low price for the functionality on offer, you really can’t complain too much. This is an excellent starter sprinkler, for those on a budget.

Pros

  • Made from durable ABS plastic.
  • Waters in a 360° rotation, for superior coverage.
  • Adjustable spray angle, from from 15° to 45°.
  • Maximum watering diameter of 10m makes it ideal for smaller lawns.
  • Lightweight and easy to move around.
  • Our lowest priced lawn sprinkler.
  • Comes with a 12-month warranty.

Cons

  • Plastic construction makes it lighter and more vulnerable to damage than metal models.
  • Prone to leaking if the water pressure exceeds 4bar.
  • Not as suitable for larger lawns.

Gardena Classic Oscillating Sprinkler

This oscillating sprinkler waters uniformly in a rectangular shape, and can be precisely programmed to cover a range from 7 – 17m

Our next lawn sprinkler is this oscillating model from Gardena, which features a slim and lightweight design. It has a range of 7 – 17m, and can water areas of up to 220 square metres, water pressure dependent.

The sprinkling width can reach a maximum of 13m. It waters uniformly in a square or rectangular shape, which is designed to optimise watering, and minimise the formation of puddles.

What makes this sprinkler really great, is that it can be infinitely adjusted, so you can alter the spray reach and angle to perfectly cover your garden – no more watering the neighbour’s hedge by accident.

It connects to most standard hose fittings, and the fine mesh stainless steel filter means the sprinkler requires minimal maintenance, and is always ready to go. This isn’t the most affordable option on our list, but it does have longevity – this hardwearing model should last for years to come.

Ultimately, if you have a square or rectangular lawn, this oscillating lawn sprinkler is just what you need to keep it evenly watered, and looking green and healthy, all year round.

Pros

  • Water up to 220 square metres, with a range of 7 – 17m.
  • Sprinkler can be infinitely adjusted, and precisely programmed, to exactly cover your lawn.
  • Designed to minimise the formation of puddles.
  • Steel filter requires minimal maintenance.
  • Waters in a rectangular shape, so it’s perfect for uniform lawns.
  • Connects to most standard hose fittings.

Cons

  • Not the most affordable option, and perhaps a little overpriced.
  • Slim, lightweight design means you might need to weigh it down.

Costwise Lawn Bar Sprinkler

This bar-style lawn sprinkler has an impressive maximum coverage, and a very reasonable price tag

Our penultimate lawn sprinkler is this bar design from Costwise. This one claims it can cover a maximum of 312 square metres (again depending on your water pressure), which is pretty impressive.

The bar is fully adjustable, and you can adjust the nozzles to water your lawn vertically or horizontally, or water on just one side. This also means you can place it alongside a path, and still keep the path dry.

The sprinkler comes with a nozzle cleaning tool, to allow you to quickly and easily deal with any blockages, and this attaches to the side of the unit, so it won’t get lost.

This isn’t the most robust design – it’s made from plastic, and is quite lightweight, so you may need to weigh it down. It is also advisable to bring the sprinkler inside over winter, or during periods of bad weather, to avoid it getting damaged.

However, considering that this is one of our most affordable lawn sprinklers, the coverage and adjustability on offer is decent, and it’s certainly worth the money.

Pros

  • Can cover an impressive 312 square metres, at high water pressure.
  • Adjustable nozzles mean you can water vertically or horizontally.
  • Includes nozzle cleaning tool, which plugs into the end of the sprinkler.
  • Low-priced, compared to similar products.

Cons

  • Can be difficult to remove the cleaning tool from the end of the unit.
  • Made from thin plastic, and very lightweight – may need to be weighed down.
  • Instructions are a little lacking.

Madeking 360 Garden Sprinkler

This sturdy, rotating garden sprinkler has a similar design to our value pick, but comes with 2 attachments, for greater customisation

The final entry on our list of the best lawn sprinklers is this 360 Garden Sprinkler by Madeking. This one is made of durable plastic, and feels sturdy and solid. It features a rotating design, similar to our value pick.

The sprinkler has a maximum spray diameter of 8 – 10 metres, when used in combination with standard pipes and water pressures of 2.5 – 4bar (note that 4bar is the maximum recommended pressure, to avoid leaks). It comes with 2 sprinkler attachments, with different settings, so you can customise it to suit your watering needs.

It has 3 arms, each of which have 4 nozzles. The nozzles are all adjustable, so you can position them at your preferred angles, for maximum coverage. The sprinkler comes with easy to follow instructions, to help you get it set up properly.

As with all of these garden sprinklers, this one is extremely easy to install – simply attach it to a hosepipe using a connector, place it in the desired location, and turn the water on. The sprinkler is compatible with hoses of diameter 11.5 – 12.5mm, and ¾” hose connectors.

It has to be said that this model is very similar in style and function to our value pick, but not as low in price. It may therefore be worth considering the Wisdom Automatic Sprinkler instead, if you’re happy with only one attachment.

Pros

  • Strong and sturdy plastic construction.
  • Includes 2 sprinkler heads with different settings, for flexibility in watering.
  • 360°-degree rotation, for excellent coverage.
  • Can reach a spray diameter of 8 – 10m, depending on water pressure.
  • Adjustable nozzles allow you to control the angle and reach of the water jets.
  • Comes with clear instructions.

Cons

  • Possibility of leaks, if the water pressure exceeds 4bar.

How To Install A Sprinkler Kit

There are various designs of lawn sprinkler systems, so it’s important to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation. More elaborate sprinkler systems may require underground installation, involving digging trenches and installing pipes – but thankfully, the sprinkler kits featured here are much easier to set up.

To install one of these sprinkler kits, you should first choose the ideal location, at a central point in the lawn you want to water. Then, simply connect the sprinkler to your water source, via a hose and connector. Turn the water on, and observe the current sprinkler pattern. If you want to make changes, turn the water off, to avoid getting wet, and adjust the nozzles.

How To Increase Water Pressure In Your Sprinkler

There are several things you can try to increase the water pressure in your lawn sprinkler. If the water pressure in your home is also low or dropping, check that the regulator on the main line is functioning correctly, to rule this out as the cause.

If this is ruled out as a problem, and the water pressure in your system is still low, ask a qualified plumber to check your pipes for blockages. If necessary, they should also be able to install a boost pump on the main line, to increase the flow of water coming from the faucet.

Assuming your home water pressure is as high as it can be, there are some ways you can alter your sprinkler system, to try to increase the pressure. First, make sure that the sprinkler is at a lower elevation than the main water line – it’s always a good idea to get gravity on your side.

Depending on the type of sprinkler system you have, you might be able to remove or block off some of the individual nozzles. This will force more water through the remaining nozzles, increasing the water pressure.

You might also be able to adjust the flow and water pattern of individual nozzles, to allow more water through. Note that, although this can increase the amount of water at that specific nozzle, it will not increase the water pressure in the system as a whole.
