Feeding your lawn during the growing season is essential for it to maintain its vigour. Without fertiliser, your lawn will quickly use up the nutrients in the soil, and begin to look dull and sparse. Applying fertiliser can also help to prevent weeds, which thrive in low-nutrient soils.
The best lawn foods and fertilisers contain all the nutrients that your lawn needs to grow. These include nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as iron and magnesium, all of which are important for healthy leaf growth. As your lawn becomes thicker, weeds and moss will also be suppressed, further improving the look of your lawn.

If you’re looking a new food for your patch of grass, check out our selection of 5 of the best lawn fertilisers below. We’ve chosen the ones which offer you the best results, for the least amount of money, and will ensure the grass is always greener on your side of the fence.
Our favourite lawn food is full of nutrients, water-soluble, and can feed an impressive 400 square metres of grass
Miracle-Gro’s Water Soluble Lawn Food is the lawn fertiliser we recommend above all others. It works to make your lawn’s roots stronger, and really lives up to the manufacturer’s claim of making grass greener in as little as 5 days.
This comprehensive lawn food contains all the essential nutrients your lawn needs, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Being water soluble means the nutrients will be pre-dissolved before they are applied to your lawn, reducing the risk of lawn scorch, even in hot weather.
The mixture should be applied in good weather, when the soil is moist, but the ground is frost-free. To apply, you can either use the Miracle-Gro Feeder (which must be purchased separately), or a regular watering can. You can apply this fertiliser to your lawn from March to October, and the container comes with clear instructions on when and how much to apply.
To use a watering can, simply mix 1 x level 15ml teaspoon of Miracle-Gro Lawn Food into an average-sized watering can (approx. 4.5 litres) full of water. This should make enough food to fertilise 2.5 square metres of lawn. The total 2kg container is capable of feeding a lawn up to 400 square metres, so it should be plenty for most gardens – although you will need to refill your watering can many times.
Overall, we believe this is one of the best lawn fertilisers on the market today, and are confident you won’t be disappointed with the results.
- Contains all the essential nutrients your lawn needs, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
- Nutrients are already dissolved, which lowers the risk of lawn scorching.
- Works to make your lawn greener in just 5 days.
- Helps to make your lawn resistant to drought.
- Suitable for use from March to October.
- Easy to apply – can either use a watering can, or the time-saving Miracle-Gro Feeder (must be purchased separately).
- If using a watering can, you will require a lot of refills – approx. 80 full cans to treat a 200 square metre lawn.
Our best value lawn food is super easy to apply – just connect it to a hose, and go
Our value pick is another product from Miracle-Gro. Their Evergreen Fast Spray comes in a 1 litre bottle, for easy spray application.
To apply, shake well, then connect the sprayer to a hose, and turn on the water. The food is then automatically drawn up and mixed with the water as you compress the trigger, and you simply spray it directly onto the grass you want to fertilise. The added bonus of this is that you’re watering your lawn at the same time.
The formula is based around nitrogen, and also includes potassium and iron. The manufacturer states that you will notice a greener lawn in as little as 24 hours, which is quite the claim. We think you might need to wait a little longer or apply a couple of treatments before you’ll notice a big difference.
Parents will be pleased to know that the formula is also safe for children, as well as pets, and it’s recommended to treat the wear and tear often caused by children and animals. It’s suitable for use from March to September (except during hot or frosty conditions), and can be applied as often as every 6 weeks.
If you’re looking for an easy way to quickly improve the look of your lawn, for the best price, this Miracle-Gro Evergreen Fast Spray is hard to beat.
- Contains nitrogen, and other essential nutrients.
- Can make a noticeable difference to your lawn in as little as 24 hours.

This cool-weather lawn feed doubles as a moss killer, so you can keep your lawn looking great over winter
Next up on our list of the best lawn feed products is this MOOWY 2-in-1 Lawn Feed and Moss Killer.
This one contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as magnesium and iron, which help to green up your lawn in as little as 7 days. The best thing about it is that, not only does it strengthen root systems and improve the look of your lawn, but it also kills moss in the process.
It’s a fine granulate, that is easy to spread over your lawn using a lawn spreader, or just by hand, and doesn’t require any mixing or diluting prior to application. It also doesn’t need to be watered in, if it’s due to rain soon after application.
The high-iron formula is specifically designed for use in cooler weather, which makes it ideal for applying to your lawn in early spring, or anytime from September to May. It’s a great choice for those wanting a winter food option for their grass.
However, take care when applying it not to get any of the product on yourself, stone or flooring, as the high iron level may cause stains. It is even advised to remove your shoes before going inside after applying it, for this reason.
It does only contain enough food to treat 50 square metres of lawn, which is comparatively low for the price point – but if you’re looking for a cool-weather lawn food that will not only help your grass to grow leafy and green, but also prevent unsightly moss, then it might just be worth it.
- 2-in-1 fertiliser and moss killer.
- Suitable for use from September to May – specifically designed for use in cooler weather.
- Apply directly – no mixing required.
- Fine granulate is easy to spread.
- Visible results in 7 days.
- High iron formula may stain flooring and stones.
- You should not walk on the lawn for 7 days after use.
- Only contains enough food for 50 square metres of lawn, which is comparatively low for the money.
This multi-functional lawn fertiliser will not only make your grass thicker and greener, but it will also tackle weeds and moss at the same
This EverGreen Complete 4-in-1 is our third choice from Miracle-Gro, showing that they really are one of the best in this field.
The 4-in-1 formula refers to the fact that the fertiliser helps to make your lawn thicker and greener, and kills weeds and moss. The WaterStart formula also helps with the absorption of nutrients and water, and works to protect your grass against drought.
You can apply this to your lawn between April and September, and you should notice your lawn looking greener around 7 days after application. Moss will blacken as it dies, and full weed control will take approximately 3 – 5 weeks.
The fertiliser should be applied on a mild day, when the ground is moist. If rain is not due, then it must be watered in, and you will need to keep children and animals away until it’s thoroughly dry.
Bear in mind that one container will only treat up to 80 square metres of lawn, which is less than our other two options from Miracle-Gro, and may not be suitable for larger lawns.
This is one of our most affordable lawn foods, and if you have a reasonably small area of lawn which want to keep weed and moss-free, this multi-purpose option is highly effective and represents excellent value.
- Helps to kill weeds and moss.
- Greener lawn in 7 days.
- Formula helps your lawn to absorb water more effectively.
- Helps to protect your lawn against drought.
- Suitable for use from April to September.
- Low price.
- Only covers 80 square metres of lawn, which might not be enough for some gardens.
- Must be kept away from children and pets, until watered in thoroughly.
A lawn food with added iron and magnesium, to give you the best-looking grass possible, throughout spring, summer and autumn
Our final lawn food is this Ultra Green Lawn Feed and Iron Supplement from Aftercut. The granulated formula contains a balance of nutrients, including iron and magnesium, which will help to keep your lawn looking its best throughout the growing season.
This one has longevity, as it can be used from February to October, providing the grass is actively growing. It can be applied as often as every 3 – 4 weeks, if necessary. The formula is specially designed to help keep moss under control, as well as ensuring your lawn looks thick, green and healthy.
This 2.8kg bag will cover 80 square metres of lawn, which is significantly less than our top pick – but this can perhaps be justified by the additional moss-suppressant qualities. Once applied, any moss will turn black, and you can then simply rake out this dead moss, to leave a green and healthy lawn.
Ultimately, this is another high-quality and fast-acting lawn feed, that will help to banish moss, and ensure all the neighbours are envious of your thick, luscious-looking lawn.
- Balanced formula which includes iron and magnesium.
- 3-day rapid greening, for quickly visible results.
- Formula designed to prevent lawn scorching, if watered in within 48 hours.
- Helps to suppress moss.
- Can be used from February to October, when the grass is actively growing.
- Can stain paving, decking, clothing and footwear.
- Children and pets should be kept clear until the product has been watered in, and has thoroughly dried.
Does Lawn Feed Actually Work?
Most lawn feed contains a high level of nitrogen, which is essential for green leaf growth. Applying a good quality lawn fertiliser, at the right time and in the right quantity, will give your lawn a hit of the nutrients it needs to grow, and can absolutely help to achieve a thick, green lawn.
The key is to choose a good fertiliser, such as those we’ve listed here, and apply it only in the manufacturer’s recommended amount and timeframe. Avoid over-fertilising, or applying fertiliser when it’s too hot, as this can lead to lawn scorch.
When To Feed Your Lawn
The best time to feed your lawn is usually considered to be mid-spring, in March or April, after the last frosts have passed, and at the beginning of the growing season. This will ensure your lawn has plenty of essential nutrients to help with the current year’s growth.
If deemed necessary, due to your lawn looking dull or sparse, you can repeat feeding over the summer months, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should usually mix the fertiliser with water or soil first, and apply when the ground is moist, to avoid scorching your lawn.
As a general rule, most spring and summer fertilisers should not be applied from September onwards, as their high nitrogen content will encourage growth at the wrong time of the year, just before the winter frosts hit.
