Storage boxes can be particularly useful if you don’t have a garage or shed in which to store your outdoor essentials. Plastic boxes are lightweight and weatherproof, and often considered the most durable and low-maintenance option. They will protect your furniture, tools and accessories from the elements, and are easy to wipe clean.
Garden storage boxes come in all sizes and styles. Whether you want a traditional green garden store, or something more Scandinavian in design, you’re sure to find the perfect one to suit your space. Many of these storage boxes are strong enough to double as garden seating as well.

To help you with the selection process, we’ve put together this list of what we believe are the 5 best plastic garden storage boxes on the market. This is based on factors such as their style, capacity, durability and value for money. Your ideal outdoor storage solution awaits!
Our favourite plastic garden storage box is large, durable and looks great – plus, you can also use it as a bench
At 62 x 152 x 63 cm, this Keter Rockwood Jumbo XL 570L in Anthracite is one of the largest garden storage boxes available. This impressive volume allows you to store bigger items, such as folding chairs and large cushions, with ease. It’s well-constructed, and entirely waterproof, keeping contents dry, even in heavy rain.
Made from durable plastic resin, not only is this storage box highly practical, but it’s also one of the most aesthetically-pleasing designs. The dark grey anthracite colour is on-trend, and it’s styled to look like wood panelling – but this material should last longer.
The box can be easily assembled in approximately 15 minutes. The finished product is strong enough to support the weight of up to two adults, so you can also use it as a stylish garden bench. This makes it ideal for smaller gardens, where space is limited and multi-functional furniture is key.
Soft close pistons prevent the lid from slamming shut and catching your fingers, as well as reducing noise. If you want to lock your storage box, this is made possible by the metal catch at the front – although you’ll need to provide your own padlock, as there isn’t one included.
This is our most expensive storage box, by a considerable amount – but you’re paying for size, and quality. This is an extremely robust and durable garden storage box, that comes highly rated by users, and will add on-trend Nordic style to your garden.
- Large 570L storage capacity is perfect for bigger items.
- Stylish grey wood-effect outer.
- Fully waterproof and weatherproof.
- Soft close pistons prevent the lid slamming shut.
- Box doubles as a bench for 1 or 2 adults.
- Built-in clasp for locking (padlock not included).
- Could be too large for smaller gardens.
- Expensive compared to similar products.
Our best value garden storage box is fully waterproof and offers a reasonable 300L of storage space, for a great price
Our next garden storage box is the one we believe offers you the best value for money. This Ward GN220 300L Garden Store is made from durable and robust plastic and measures 115 x 55 x 60 cm.
With a capacity of 300 litres, it’s considerably more compact than the Keter storage box, but there’s still plenty of space for outdoor cushions, games and equipment. A 300-litre volume is a pretty average size for a garden store of this type – the Keter is exceptionally large.
The split butterfly lid on this box allows you to access the interior storage space from either side, which might be helpful if you have an awkward space for your store, and also enables you to place the box flush against a wall. There’s a ring clasp on the front through which you can place a padlock (not included), for added security.
The box is easy to assemble in as little as 3 minutes and doesn’t require any tools. It’s strong enough for you to sit on, if you want to also use it as a garden chair. Channels direct rainwater away from the opening of the box, ensuring the contents stay dry, even in heavy downpours.
This is one of our most affordable garden storage boxes, and considering the great quality, effective waterproofing, and durability, we think it offers incredible value.
- Made from thick, durable plastic.
- Fully waterproof and weatherproof.
- Large enough to store cushions, but compact enough for most gardens.
- Split lid allows for easy access from all angles.
- Quick and easy to assemble – no tools required.
- Highly affordable.
- Comparatively small size means less storage space.
- Although fully waterproof, design of the lid means water gathers in the middle – take care when opening not to drip this onto contents.
This compact outdoor storage box has concealed wheels, to make it easy to move around your garden
Our next garden store, the Deuba Marvel 270L Storage Box, has a similar capacity and price point as the Ward Garden Store. It’s made from durable plastic which is UV and fade-resistant, as well as waterproof. At 117 x 45 x 47cm, it’s perfect for smaller spaces.
Having said that, there’s still enough room inside to store cushions, and garden equipment such as garden hoses and watering cans. Externally, the box is strong enough to double as a garden bench for up to 2 people, and is capable of supporting weight of up to 220kg.
This is another one that’s exceptionally easy to assemble, with no tools required. Instead, the pieces simply lock into place, thanks to the intelligent smart click system. A built-in locking device will secure the lid, if you provide the padlock.
Concealed wheels and lateral handles make it easy to move the box around your garden, so you don’t need to worry about assembling it in the perfect spot. It’s also a good choice if you like to regularly rearrange your garden furniture.
The dark anthracite colour of the box will go with every design scheme. Overall, this is a stylish, durable and easy-to-assemble garden store, that’s perfect for those who want something a little more mobile.
- Made from durable, weatherproof and UV resistant plastic.
- Can be used as a garden bench for 2 people.
- Compact size is perfect for smaller gardens.
- Lateral carry handles and concealed wheels make it easy to move around.
- Easy to assemble, no tools required.
- Reasonably priced.
- Might be too small to store larger furniture cushions.
- Catch not tight – may pop open if the box is too full.
A lightweight, two-tone grey storage box, that’s suitable for both indoor and outdoor use – but can’t be used as seating
This two-tone Garden Storage Box by Olsen & Smith features a wood-panelling effect in two shades of grey, and is great for adding a more modern, Nordic look to your garden.
It measures 107 x 51 x 53cm, and has a 270-litre capacity, the same as the Deuba model. The box is made from durable polypropylene, and is weather-resistant. As with the previous two boxes, this one is easy to assemble, with no tools required.
The polypropylene construction makes it particularly lightweight, which, combined with the vacuum-moulded handles, means it easier to move around (although there are no wheels).
However, the disadvantage of this is that it’s not strong enough to be sat on. In fact, compared to the other models, the plastic is thinner, and it feels significantly more flimsy.
That being said, it still serves its purpose and is very reasonably priced. If you’re looking for a stylish garden storage box that’s also suitable for indoor use, you might have found it here.
- Made from lightweight yet durable polypropylene.
- Stylish two-tone grey aesthetic.
- Vacuum-moulded handles make it easier to move around.
- Easy to assemble with no tools required.
- Plastic is a little flimsy.
- Not strong enough to be sat on – can’t be used as a bench.
- Might be too small for some common items.
Our smallest outdoor box is ideally suited to smaller gardens, or for storing toys and tools
Last on our list of the best garden storage boxes is this Charles Bentley Outdoor Garden Box. With a 250 litre capacity, and measuring 112 x 49 x 54cm, this is our smallest outdoor box (just), and offers you the least amount of storage space – but this might be preferable to those with smaller gardens.
This one comes in a choice of 3 colours – a grey base with either a black, brown or green lid – so you can choose the one which suits the look want to create in your garden, or that matches your other furniture. It comes with built-in handles and wheels, to make it easy to move around.
It advertises tool-less assembly, but several users have had problems getting the pieces together without help, and so a soft mallet may be required, and we would recommend enlisting the help of another person.
There are also some reports of the box not being completely waterproof in heavy storms, so you might want to put this to the test before storing anything valuable in there. It certainly doesn’t feel as sturdy and watertight as some of the others.
Although you’re unlikely to get much furniture in this, it could still be a great option for tools or outdoor toys. It’s also another highly affordable choice, so great if you don’t want to invest too much in your garden storage solution.
- Made from durable and waterproof polyester.
- Available in a choice of 3 colours.
- Our most compact garden storage box – perfect for smaller gardens.
- Wheels and carry handles make it easier to move around.
- Competitive price.
- Not wide enough to store larger items, such as folding chairs.
- May require a mallet to get the pieces together during assembly.
- Prone to leaking.
How To Keep Your Garden Storage Box Secure
There are several things you can do to help keep your garden storage box secure. Firstly, make sure when you choose your box that you select one that’s made of thick and durable plastic; flimsier designs will be more prone to weather damage, and easy to break into.
You can fix your storage box to the ground, using brackets and screws, sand bags or tent pegs. This will help to keep it in place and prevent it being moved or carried away by the wind. Positioning the box in a sheltered area, against a wall or fence, will also help with this.
To help prevent theft of the items being stored in your chest, it is a good idea to secure the closure of your box, using a padlock. This will not only deter thieves, but also help to keep the lid closed in the wind, and prevent children or animals from gaining access. Look for a lockable storage box with a built-in clasp, to make this possible.
Never leave valuable items on display in your garden which might attract thieves – instead, lock them securely in your storage box or shed, or keep items of high value inside your home. Refrain from positioning your garden store under a window, or somewhere it could be used to assist thieves in gaining access to your home. There are also other, more general steps you can take to keep your garden secure. Low hedges and fences around the front garden will deter intruders, as they will be easily seen from the street. Hedges with brambles can act as a natural deterrent, and failing that, you can employ some manmade techniques and install motion-activated security alarms and/or lighting around your property.
