The UK’s Best Garden Football Goals For Outdoor Play With The Kids

portable football goals on garden lawn
Written by April Foot

For footy-mad kids (and adults), having your own football goal in your garden to practise your skills is the stuff of dreams. Those dreams usually involve you as your team’s top striker, who just can’t stop scoring goals – at least, until mum says it’s time for dinner.

Whether you want to organise a 5-a-side, or just practice penalty shootouts, adding a children’s football goal to your garden can be a great way to encourage your kids to put down their devices, abandon the latest FIFA video game, and play outside, for real, instead.

Not only is this a healthy activity for them, but it can also increase your opportunity for interaction and bonding time with your budding Pelé or Ronaldo. Who knows, you might even get the chance to teach them a thing or two!

If you’ve decided to add a football goal (or 2) to your garden, read on for our pick of 5 of the best garden football goals, based on factors such as their size, durability and value for money, to help you choose the best possible equipment for your Beautiful Game.

Best Pick: Samba Locking Football Goals

Our favourite garden football goal is strong and sturdy, and looks just like the real thing

Topping our list of the best garden football goals is this Locking Goal by Samba. As the name suggests, Samba makes use of an interlocking system to assemble their weatherproof uPVC goal, which ensures all parts of the goal stay securely together during play.

It also has reinforced corners for extra durability, and the whole thing feels incredibly sturdy and robust. The net is an improvement on previous models (a common complaint was some of the strings snapping) and is now thicker than ever, so it should withstand all you can kick at it.

The goal is available in a choice of 4 sizes, so there’s one to suit every football-mad family and garden. It’s easy to assemble and disassemble using the locking system, and it comes with ground anchors to secure it in place. This makes it so sturdy, that you may not ever need to take it down – which is good, because there’s no storage bag included.

Samba is a well-name known in the world of football goals, and their products are used by many schools and youth clubs, as well as pro clubs. By purchasing one of their goals, you can rest assured you’re getting a professional-grade product that’s been well-tried, tested and improved upon.

Overall, we think this is absolutely the best garden football goal on the market and one you and the kids will be happy to score in – and hit the post of – for years to come.

Pros

  • Realistic design – made from heavy-duty, weatherproof uPVC.
  • Thick corners and interlocking joints ensure the goal is sturdy and stays together during play.
  • Durable net – thicker than previous models.
  • A well-known brand name used by schools and pro clubs.
  • Includes ground anchors to keep the goal in place.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • Crossbar is prone to slight sagging in the middle.
  • No storage bag included.

Value Pick: Fastfold Kid’s Popup Goal Nets

Our best value football goal is super-small and highly-portable

Next on our list is this Fastfold Kid’s Popup Goal. Measuring 2 x 3 x 2ft, it’s ideal for younger children, and for use in small gardens and patios – although, not really suitable for larger pitches with older players.

One of the best things about this one is how portable it is – the pop-up design means it can be easily folded away for transportation and carried using the convenient strap. This also means there’s no installation required – it can be erected in seconds – and it’s perfect for taking on holiday, to the park or to the beach.

Of course, the design has its drawbacks – it’s not immediately obvious how to fold the goal back down, and there are no instructions included on how to do this. Check out the YouTube demonstration videos from other users for advice on how to twist it down correctly.

The lightweight of the product also means it’s easily moved around by the ball or the wind, unless it’s pegged down securely – 3 ground pegs are provided for this purpose. Furthermore, it’s not the most durable goal on our list, and it doesn’t look like a professional football goal, which may or may not matter to your little one.

However, with all this being said, it’s still a fully-functional, albeit small, football goal, and is about as portable a one as you will find – plus, with a price like this, there’s really only one thing to say: GOOOOOAL!!!

Pros

  • Small size is perfect for young children.
  • Pop-up design and light weight makes it ultra-portable.
  • The net is made from durable polypropylene yarn.
  • Highly affordable.

Cons

  • Too small for many gardens, and adult players.
  • Not the most robust design.
  • Not realistic looking.

Dimples Portable Football Goals

The best thing about these ultra-portable goals? There’s 2 of them!

These Dimples Portable Goals have many of the same benefits as the Fastfold net – they’re lightweight, foldable and easy to transport – but they’re larger, and most importantly, there are 2 of them. This means you don’t have to purchase twice in order to play a proper game!

The pop-up design means they’re super easy to assemble. Much like the Fastfold, there’s a knack to folding these goals up and getting them back in the handy carry bag. However, these ones do come at least come with instructions for how to do this. Once you’ve mastered twisting them into a figure-of-eight shape, you should be able to pack them away in seconds too.

The portability of these goals is one of their main selling features – they’re perfect for people who don’t want football goals as a permanent feature in their garden, or coaches who need to be able to set up and remove goals quickly and easily on rented premises.

The goals are made from a durable Dacron material, which is said to be twice as strong as average goal netting, whilst the frame is a strong yet lightweight fibreglass, designed to withstand the strongest kicks. Stainless steel ground pegs are also included, to secure the goals firmly to the ground during play.

Ultimately, for anyone looking to practise their football in a non-fixed location, these portable goals are the perfect choice – and with 2 goals included, they also represent excellent value for money.

Pros

  • The net is made from durable Dacron material – twice as strong as average goal netting.
  • Fibreglass poles are strong and lightweight.
  • Includes 2 goals, so you can have a proper game.
  • Pop-up design makes them easy to transport.
  • No assembly required.

Cons

  • Small size (40 x 29 x 30-inches).
  • Don’t look like professional football goals.

Forza 6’ x 4’ Nets

This football goal looks similar to a professional goal – but it’s child-sized

Measuring in at 6 x 4ft, this Forza Goal is the perfect size for children and adults alike. The white frame and net give it the appearance of a professional football goal, which is sure to delight footy-mad kids.

Like the Samba goal, it’s made from high-impact uPVC tubing with a 68mm diameter, designed to be strong, yet lightweight. The goal is 100% weatherproof and is one of few garden football goals where the manufacturer advises that it can be left outside year-round.

The goal takes around 30 minutes for the average user to assemble, and involves slotting the uPVC posts together and locking them in place, then attaching the net. The end result feels robust and sturdy, although you’ll still want to secure it to the ground using the 2 included pegs, to ensure it stays put during a game or strong winds.

The net of the goal is made from UV-treated HDPE and is designed to withstand the elements and resist rot, even when left outside during wet weather. It’s not easy to transport like the pop-up goals, but it is light enough that you can move it around your garden as desired.

Overall, this is a sturdy, durable and good-sized garden goal, with a professional appearance, that’s perfect for anyone who just wants to put it together and leave it in the garden, without having to worry about it getting weather-damaged.

Pros

  • Durable uPVC construction.
  • Locking system to keep posts together during play.
  • UV-treated HDPE rot-proof net.
  • Easy to assemble in just 5 minutes.
  • Can be left outside year-round.

Cons

  • Not easy to transport.
  • Some reports of the net being delivered with faults.

Charles Bentley Junior Portable Goals

The wide, low shape of this garden football goal makes it suitable for all ages

Last up on our list of the best garden football goals is this Junior Portable Goal by Charles Bentley. This one measures 8 x 4ft, which gives it a wider shape that’s more reminiscent of a professional football goal, and makes it suitable for children of all ages – no need for little ones to get upset when they can’t reach the crossbar!

The frame is made from a plastic pole with a diameter of 22mm, which is significantly less than the 68mm diameter of the Samba and Forza goals, and suggests it might not be quite as robust. It does, however, feel sturdy, and is lightweight enough to move around your garden.

The goal features a simple, clip together construction that makes it easy to assemble and disassemble – although it’s still not as portable as any of the pop-up designs. As for the net, it’s made from durable polyester and should withstand many a hat-trick.

You can purchase this goal individually, or there is a saving when buying as a pair, making for a highly cost-effective option. This could be ideal if you want two goals to create your own realistic football pitch in your garden (see below for more information on how to do this).

Ultimately, this goal is durable, weatherproof and looks great – not to mention it’s excellent value for money, especially when purchased as a pair. We think your miniature Messi will approve!

Pros

  • Durable plastic pole construction.
  • Wide goal makes for a more professional look.
  • Hardwearing polyester net.
  • Suitable for all ages.
  • Excellent value – can be purchased individually or as a pair.

Cons

  • No storage bag included.
  • Poles not as thick as some competitors.

How To Make A Football Pitch In Your Garden

The first thing you need to make a football pitch in your garden is space. Not many people will have enough room for a full-sized football pitch, or even a 5-a-side (about the size of a tennis court), but you can work with what you’ve got, as long as it’s a clear rectangular area, with no obstructions.

Ideally, your garden will already be laid to lawn, but if not, you can lay turf, or play the long game and sow grass seed. This shouldn’t be just any grass seed though – select a high percentage of a perennial rye variety, which will better withstand heavy wear from football games.

If you want a truly all-weather football pitch, and you’re happy to invest a little more, you could also consider covering the area with artificial grass – this is a highly durable and low-maintenance option that more and more people are adopting for their gardens.

Next, you should purchase and install your goals (one at either end, for the football clueless out there). Make sure these are securely fastened to the ground, to prevent them from moving during play. Depending on the goal, you may need to put them away at the end of each match to stop them getting damaged or blown away in the wind.

Your DIY football pitch is coming together. In order for it to look truly realistic, the next step is to create the pitch markings, using white spray paint. Once these are completely dry, you’re ready to bend it like Beckham – just remember to use a foam football, if you want to avoid broken windows!
