Written by April Foot

If you’re tired of using an axe to cut up logs for your fire or wood burning stove, an electric hydraulic log splitter is here to make your life easier.

Electric log splitters are mains powered and need hydraulic fluid to function. They work by pushing a wedge-shaped blade into your log, to split it in half. These machines are generally easy to operate, and there are different styles and sizes available, depending on the type and size of your logs.

The main advantage of using a log splitter is that it’s safer (if used correctly), and puts much less strain on you, compared to using an axe or sledgehammer to manually divide logs. It’s also more efficient, allowing you to chop a greater amount of wood, in the same amount of time.

To help you choose the best electric hydraulic log splitter for you, we’ve chosen our five favourite options on the market, based on their power, usability, safety features and value for money.

Best Pick: Forest Master 5 Ton Electric Log Splitter

Our best electric log splitter is a powerful, entry-level model

This Forest Master 5 Ton Electric Log Splitter features a powerful 2200W motor, which is more than many similar models and helps to make it an excellent entry-level option.

The 5 tons of force created can split logs up to 37cm in length, and 25cm in diameter. This isn’t the largest of capabilities, but it does work on all types of wood, and the logs produced are suitable for most sizes of domestic log burner.

Helpfully, this log splitter features an energy-saving design, which uses up to 50% less electricity, compared to 2 lever models. This makes it more environmentally-friendly, as well as better for your wallet.

There are also plenty of safety features, including two-handed operation, and an included safety guard, which allows you to contain split logs and reduce the risk of injury from flying debris.

It comes with a workbench included, but there’s no stand, so you’ll need to place it on a table, purchase a stand separately, or be prepared to use it on the ground. You’ll also need to procure an 8mm Allen key to open the oil reservoir, as there isn’t one included.

Overall though, this is a high-quality, mid-range electric log splitter, that is built to last. If you experience any problems, the machine comes with reassuring lifetime technical support from the manufacturer, so you should be able to work things out.

Pros

  • Powerful 2200W motor.
  • Split logs up to 37cm in length.
  • Energy-saving design.
  • Includes workbench and safety guard.
  • Comes with lifetime technical support.

Cons

  • No stand included.
  • 8mm Allen key required for oil reservoir – not included.

Value Pick: Forest Master Vertical Log Splitter

Our best value hydraulic log splitter is manual, but can easily handle large logs

Our next log splitter is a more affordable option from Forest Master. This one is a manual hydraulic design, rather than electric, and produces 10 tons of force. It is capable of splitting logs up to 51cm in length, and 30 or 50cm in diameter (depending on what position you’re using it in), which is more than the previous electric model.

A twin Duocut blade works in combination with a stationary blade to optimise the cutting performance. This allows it to split even hardwood with knots in with ease, as there are two blades to tackle every piece. The machine has a solid construction and feels safe and sturdy to use.

The splitter can be used either vertically with foot pedals, or horizontally with hand levers, offering you greater versatility. An adjustable blade allows you to split logs more quickly, as you don’t have to wait for the blade to get to the wood.

However, being manual, it is a little slower than other models, as you have to release the hydraulic valve each time. This one won’t save you much time compared to using an axe or sledgehammer, but it is still easier and puts you under less strain.

It might not be the best quality product on our list, and it is manual – but considering it’s also the lowest priced and can handle splitting large, hard logs, we still think this offers you excellent value for money.

Pros

  • Produces 10 tons of force.
  • Twin blades for optimised splitting capacity.
  • Can split larger logs, up to 51cm in length, and hardwood.
  • Adjustable blade position.
  • Versatile – can be used vertically or horizontally.
  • Highly affordable.

Cons

  • Not electric.
  • Not the best quality.
  • Relatively slow to use, as you have to release the hydraulic valve each time.
  • Allen key provided does not fit all the bolts.

The Handy 6 Ton Splitter With Guard

This electric hydraulic log splitter slices through wood like butter

This Handy 6 Ton Splitter with Guard is an electric hydraulic log splitter with a powerful 2200W motor, to match the Forest Guard splitter at number one on our list.

It produces a slightly higher 6 tons of splitting force, which is capable of splitting logs of up to an impressive 52cm in length, and 25cm in diameter – ensuring you’ll never have to lift an axe again. It can handle all types of wood, including hardwood, greenwood and knotted wood.

As with the Forest Guard, this one demands 2-handed operation, and also has a built-in safety cage, making it safer to operate. The power cord is 1.8m in length, allowing you to work at a reasonable distance from the power source, without needing an extension cable.

Despite the sizable and heavy construction, large wheels and a pull handle ensure you’ll be able to move the log splitter around your workspace, or in and out of storage, with relative ease.

It does require some self-assembly, and the assembly instructions could be better – but once you’ve got it together, you won’t look back. Ultimately, this is another high-performing electric hydraulic log splitter, for a very reasonable price.

Pros

  • Powerful 2200W motor.
  • Cut logs up to 52cm in length.
  • Splits hardwood and green logs easily.
  • Wheels allow for easy transportation.
  • 1.8m long power cord

Cons

  • Assembly instructions are not the best.
  • Heavy (59kg).

Forest Master 7 Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter

An electric hydraulic log splitter that produces 7 tons of force – perfect for wider logs

Our next option is another model from Forest Master – this 7 Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter. This machine’s powerful 2200W motor creates 7 tons of force, which can be used to split logs of up to 43cm in length, and 40cm in diameter. This makes it a great option for wider logs.

The fully adjustable cycle allows you to split logs more quickly, and the energy-saving motor doesn’t use electricity when not in cycle, making it an eco-friendlier option – as well as saving you money.

It features a Duocut blade, which slices through the log from both ends. This both reduces overall splitting time and improves efficiency, as if one blade encounters a knot and gets stuck, the other blade will continue to cut from the other side.

The machine is operated using two hands and includes a safety cage, to contain falling debris and further protect the user. These features ensure that the machine meets the latest safety standards.

As with the 5-ton Forest Master model, this one can be used on the floor, or if you want to save your back, you can place it on a table, or purchase a stand for it separately. Bear in mind that if you’re splitting large logs, it’s a good idea to work at ground level, to reduce the risk of injury from falling wood.

This is the most expensive electric hydraulic log splitter in our selection, but considering the power it offers, if you want to split wider logs, it’s definitely a contender.

Pros

  • Powerful energy-saving 2200W motor.
  • Blades split logs from both ends.
  • Fully adjustable cycle for quick log splitting.
  • Split logs up to 43cm in length and 40cm in diameter.
  • Includes workbench and safety cage.
  • Ready to use straight out of the box.

Cons

  • Our most expensive log splitter.
  • No stand included.
  • Heavy (54kg).

Forest Master Hydraulic FM5

This compact electric hydraulic log splitter is perfect for beginners or creating wood for small fires

Finally, we’re rounding off our list of the best electric hydraulic log splitters with this Forest Master Hydraulic FM5. This is the fourth model from Forest Master in our selection, which reflects their expertise in this field.

The FM5 model again features a 2200W motor, but due to its more compact size, it is only capable of splitting logs up to 30cm in length and 30cm in diameter. This makes it an ideal option for beginners or those who just want to create logs for a small fire or wood burner.

The compact size and lightweight (32kg) might also be appealing to those with little space. However, be aware that the machine is only recommended for splitting softwood and greenwood, unlike some of the larger and more powerful models, which can also handle hardwood.

A workbench and safety guard are included, but if you want a stand, you’ll have to purchase this separately – which is fairly standard for most log splitters at this price point.

A couple of online users have experienced problems with the construction, but these seem to be very much in the minority. Most users are impressed with the quality and effectiveness of this machine, especially in relation to its compact size and highly reasonable price. If you just want to chop a few smaller logs for your fire, this FM5 model should more than suffice.

Pros

  • Powerful 2200W motor.
  • Fast cycle time of 9 seconds.
  • Lightweight (32kg) and compact – easy to transport and store.
  • Ideal for beginners, or for small wood-burning stoves.
  • Includes workbench and safety guard.

Cons

  • Only suitable for soft and green wood, not hard or knotted wood.
  • Can only cut logs up to 30cm in length.
  • No stand included.

How To Use A Log Splitter

Before using a log splitter, you should ensure you are wearing protective clothing, including goggles, gloves and steel toecap boots, as a precaution against flying debris. Different log splitters may vary, so you should always consult the manufacturer’s instructions for how to correctly operate yours.

As a general rule, log splitters work by applying hydraulic pressure through a pump and cylinder, to push a cutting wedge or blade into a log. To use one, you will need to place the log in the correct position and turn the machine on. Hydraulic fluid will move from the pump into the cylinder, pushing the wedge, and engaging the log.

Fluid pressure will then begin to build, and once there is enough pressure, the wedge will be pushed through the log, splitting it in half. Make sure to stand well clear of the machine to avoid the split pieces falling on your feet. You can then remove the split wood and repeat the procedure for the next log.

What Hydraulic Oil Should You Use In Your Log Splitter?

Firstly, it is important to note that hydraulic oil and hydraulic fluid are not the same – hydraulic fluid consists of a mixture of hydraulic oil, water and emulsions, and it is usually this which is recommended for log splitters. Within this, the fluid can be either synthetic or mineral-based and can have various properties, such as anti-wear, anti-foaming and anti-rust.

To find the best option for your log splitter, consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for their approved brands. You should only ever use one type of hydraulic fluid at a time – do not mix multiple fluids. It is essential to always make sure there is enough hydraulic fluid in your log splitter, to avoid damaging it – between 4 and 7 gallons may be required, depending on the model.
