The UK’s Best Artificial Hanging Baskets That Look Like The Real Thing

artificial flowers hanging in a basket with balloons in background

The best artificial hanging baskets allow even the least green-thumbed of gardeners to enjoy year round colour in their gardens.

If you want to do the right thing for people and planet, it has to be said that real plants are the way to go. Plastic is problematic. As you are no doubt aware, plastic contributes to the climate crisis and creates a waste issue at the end of its useful life. Plastic flowers won’t do anything for bees or other wildlife. They won’t smell so good. They won’t provide oxygen or clean the air. And they certainly won’t provide any yields for you and your family as real plants can do.

But let’s face it, we can’t all be master gardeners. And some of us just feel don’t have the time to create beautiful hanging baskets for living floral displays. We might just want a shortcut to a beautiful space.

If you have a busy job, can’t find the time to garden, or need to ease into things, you may still want to choose an artificial option. So to help you decide which one to go for, we’ve created this list of the UK’s best artificial hanging baskets that look like the real thing. You never know, they might just be the gateway drug that gets you inspired and encourages you to start growing for real.

We’ve made our selections based on vibrancy, longevity, value, and most of all, on the realism of the display. With one of these options, no one will know they’re artificial unless they get very close. So you can choose to take the credit for your beautiful blooms!

Best Pick: Red Begonia and Yellow Geranium Display in 14″ Hanging Basket

Realistic Begonia and Geranium Display

We feel that the best hanging baskets are those that look most like the real thing. Just because you have chosen the easy route – that does not mean that everyone has to know it.

This display is large and grand enough to make an impact. (Around 14 inches (35.5cm) in diameter.) But not so extravagant that realism is reduced.

The flowers and foliage of this particular hanging basket are highly realistic, and we like the attention to detail in the shaping and floral artistry of the design. We also love the vibrant reds and yellows against the greens.

Another thing that sets this Closer2Nature display apart is the attractive hanging basket itself, which is made from high-quality, durable willow.

Whenever we do choose to buy a plastic product, or another non-recyclable item, longevity should be a consideration. We should aim to keep such items for as long as possible, and never view them as disposable items.

This basket is built to last. Not only is the basket high quality, the whole display is also UV resistant, so it will survive outdoors in all weathers over a longer period of time without fading.

Pros

  • High level of realism in the overall display, flowers and foliage.
  • Vibrant colours and a very attractive overall effect.
  • Good quality levels – this is a product built to last.
  • A willow basket – a lovely and more eco-friendly natural material.
  • UV resistant – so colours won’t fade outdoors.

Cons

  • Synthetic flowers – which can never truly live up to the appeal of the real thing.
  • Far more expensive than many other products on the market.

Value Pick: Smart Garden Artificial Pansy Hanging Basket

Affordable Artificial Pansy Display

This is another artificial hanging basket that can look great for brightening garden spaces, a veranda or porch. At only a little over a quarter the price of our top pick, this is still a pretty realistic display that we feel offers excellent value for money.

Like the begonias and geraniums in our top pick, the pansies in this display are artificial versions of flowers frequently grown in hanging baskets. By sticking to flowers that can really be grown in hanging baskets, you will stand a better chance of ‘fooling’ people into thinking they are the real thing.

The galvanised chains on this 30cm basket won’t tarnish or rust over time. And the flowers and foliage are UV resistant and weather-proof. So they’ll continue to look as vibrant and cheerful as new over a long period of time.

The flowers of this display may not quite have the same levels of botanical accuracy and realism as our top pick. But for the price, we think you’re getting a reasonably realistic display, with cheerful colours that are bright without being over the top.

Pros

  • Beautiful artificial pansies with foliage in a reasonably naturalistic display.
  • Affordable price – great value for money.
  • Galvanised steel chains.
  • UV resistant, weather-proof foliage.

Cons

  • Pansies are an easy plant to grow for real. And while they look great from a few feet away, these plastic pansies can’t really compare to the real thing.
  • Not quite as botanically accurate as the flowers on more expensive artificial hanging baskets.

Artificial Silk Pansy Ball Hanging Basket

Colourful Pansy Ball Hanging Basket

One of the things we like about this artificial hanging basket is that it is one of the ball types that looks good from all angles – even from directly beneath. Unlike the products mentioned above, this pansy ball does not have an area of bare basket at the base.

Another thing that sets this product apart is that you can choose different colour combinations. We particularly like the vibrant display with artificial silk pansies in red, pink, white, yellow and purple. It really can add a splash of colour to cheer up your outside spaces.

But we also like that you can opt for particular colours, so you can tie in this feature with the rest of your garden scheme.

We also like that these are hand built in the UK. And that they are ready to just pop up and enjoy. If you love the vibrancy of pansies but have struggled to grow your own in a particular spot, this pansy ball could be the compromise you’re looking for. They don’t look identical to real pansies – but certainly look realistic when viewed from a few feet away.

Pros

  • Vibrant colours (and a choice of colour-ways).
  • Reasonably realistic looking foliage and flowers.
  • Ball type artificial hanging basket – looks good from all angles.
  • Hand-built in the UK.

Cons

  • Again, cannot compare to real flowers, and the environmental concerns should be taken into account.
  • The ball style planting is not as naturalistic as other displays.

Closer2Nature Artificial Yellow and White Pansy and Geranium Display

Naturalistic Pansy and Geranium Basket

Another offering from Closer2Nature who took the top spot on this list, this is another of their high quality displays. We like the cheerful yellow pansies and white geraniums, but especially, as in our top pick, the way in which these have been combined with trailing ivy and other foliage to create a naturalistic look.

This artificial hanging basket is very similar, and shares many of the same advantages as our top pick. It is simply down to aesthetics which one of the colour and plant combinations you prefer. For us, the vibrant red hues of our top pick took top prize. But you might prefer the subtler yellow and white combination in this offering.

As with the first basket on this list, this option also offers excellent botanical accuracy, which gives a really realistic look.  And it is expertly crafted to withstand variable weather conditions.

Pros

  • High level of botanical accuracy and naturalistic arrangement.
  • Pretty colours and a very attractive overall effect.
  • Good quality levels – this is a product built to last.
  • A willow basket – a lovely and more eco-friendly natural material.
  • UV resistant blended silk flowers– so colours won’t fade outdoors.

Cons

  • Artificial flowers won’t bring the benefits to you or your garden that real flowers can bring.
  • This product is also more pricy that many others on the market (though we would argue that when it comes to artificial hanging baskets, you do get what you pay for).

Artificial Pansy Hanging Flower Basket

Overspilling Willow Pansy Basket

This is another hanging basket that we like because it looks pretty realistic. The flowers may not be quite as botanically accurate as others on this list. But they still look like real flowers if viewed from the distance from which they would usually be viewed. And since pansies are commonly grown in hanging baskets, it is believable that they could be real.

We love the abundance of blooms in this hanging basket. The 30cm diameter willow basket is crammed with fabric flowers in pinks, mauves, violets and creams, with just enough flowing foliage to keep things looking relatively natural.

Lightweight and easy to hang, you can use this hanging basket indoors or out. Then you can simply sit back and enjoy the blooms without doing any work at all.

Pros

  • A reasonably realistic display.
  • Huge number of colourful blooms in each basket.
  • Quick and easy way to add colour indoors or outside.

Cons

  • Not quite as realistic as other pansies in artificial baskets on this list.
  • May not be quite as durable if used outdoors as other options mentioned above.

How To Arrange Artificial Flowers In A Hanging Basket

In the list above, you will note that we have suggested sticking to flowers that are typically grown in hanging baskets. This will make it harder for friends or neighbours to determine that they are not the real thing. So this is a good idea if realism is something you are aiming for.

Of course, this is not a hard and fast rule. When choosing artificial hanging baskets, you could also throw reality out the window. You could include a bizarre combination of artificial flowers from around the globe and really give free reign to your imagination. Of course, you won’t be restricted by environment, climate or conditions, as you would be with real plants.

If you make your own hanging baskets with artificial flowers, you have even more freedom. You can create something more akin to an art installation than a garden. But how do you arrange flowers in a hanging basket?

First things first, choose your basket. Your hanging container could be any size or shape.

Next, it is normal to place floral foam into this basket. (Though note – this is a toxic and non environmentally friendly material. Consider using wire netting, moss, clay or sand to hold artificial plants in place instead.)

When choosing flowers, aim for a good mix of colours, textures and shapes. Don’t neglect the greenery.

Broadly speaking, when creating a hanging basket with artificial flowers you should have:

  • Thrillers (bigger, showier and more colourful elements of your design).
  • Fillers (leaves, feathery foliage and less showy blooms).
  • Spillers (trailing elements that spill out over the sides of your basket).

Begin by placing the thrillers, then move onto the fillers, then carefully and artfully arrange the spillers around the edge of your hanging container.

Can You Leave These Baskets Out In The Rain?

Most artificial hanging baskets are designed to be left outside in all conditions. You can usually leave any of reasonably quality outdoors when it rains without any ill effect. But the quality of the artificial flowers and the materials used will determine how well they survive, and how battered they may look after a deluge.

Poor quality flowers can sometimes look a little bedraggled after heavy rains, or be dislodged from their arrangements in blustery conditions. Sun can also fade lower quality flowers over time.

Good quality artificial hanging baskets can often be left outside all year long. But depending on your location, it may be better to bring them under cover over the winter months. Strong winds and stormy weather can be a concern. So in less sheltered and more extreme environments, it may be best to retire the baskets after summer fades.

Use common sense when it comes to positioning and securing your baskets, and you should be able to enjoy them throughout the seasons.

But remember, even the best artificial flowers cannot offer you all the benefits of real ones.

Before you decide to opt for one of the artificial options like those mentioned above, make sure you at least consider creating a low maintenance garden with real flowers and other plants. Choose the right plants for your hanging baskets throughout the year, and use the right techniques, and you will find that maintaining them takes far less effort than you may have imagined.
