In small numbers ants might not be a problem but when they build nests under the plants in your garden, they can easily damage the roots and prevent them from being able to absorb water.

Although it’s rare for ants to directly feed on plants, this doesn’t mean they can’t be a serious nuisance when they take over your garden. Often people assume that there’s little they can do about ants in the garden but there are actually some excellent products out there that will help you deal with the issue.

In order to help you tackle the problem of an ant infestation in your garden, we’ve rated some of the best ant killing products currently on the market. We’ve looked at their key features as well as their pros and cons so you can make an informed decision.

How To Get Rid Of An Ant Infestation In Your Garden

In addition to using products like those we covered above, there are other steps you can take to prevent ants from becoming a problem in your garden.

Get plants that repel ants

There are a number of plants that repel ants and stop them from roaming further and even venturing into your home. Usually plants that have a distinct aroma will work best. You can either have them as potted plants or plant them directly into a flowerbed. Below are some of the best ones –

  • Lavender – Lavender is very effective at repelling ants thanks to its distinctive aroma. You’ll need to find a bright spot in your garden to plant it though, since lavender needs plenty of sunlight in order to thrive.
  • Mint – Mint is an obvious choice as an ant repellent due to its extremely strong smell. The good thing about mint is it doesn’t require too much direct sunlight so you should be able to get away with planting it in a shaded area. If you have it as a potted plant, then you’ll need to water it regularly.
  • Thyme – Thyme is another good choice of plant if you want to keep ants at bay. Just like mint, it has a strong smell and doesn’t require too much direct sunlight, making it a very practical choice.
  • Marigolds – Marigolds not only look great, but they also work very well as an ant repellent. They do need a lot of direct sunlight to thrive however so they wouldn’t be suitable for all gardens.
  • Rosemary – Although it doesn’t have quite the same distinctive aroma as some of the other plants mentioned above, rosemary still works very well at keeping ants away. It does need quite a bit of sunlight so be sure to plant it in an area that has plenty of exposure.
  • Tansy – Tansy is another plant that looks great in a garden and does a good job of repelling ants. Make sure that you have a spot with a lot of sunlight if you want it to thrive.

Sprinkle pepper around plants

Another good tip for keeping ants away from your garden and particularly your plants is to spread pepper or cinnamon around them. This will help to repel ants but without injuring or killing them.

Pour boiling water on any nests

Solutions don’t come much cruder than this. You simply pour the boiling water down any nests you find. For this to be effective you of course must know where the nests are to begin with. Even then, however, it might take several attempts before it’s effective since ant nests are designed to be able to withstand flooding.

Can You Use Homemade Ant Killer?

If you don’t want to spend money or you haven’t had success with ant killing products you’ve bought in the past, then there are also homemade remedies for dealing with ant infestations. Some are more effective than others of course but they’re all relatively easy and inexpensive to make.

Below are some of the main homemade spray remedies you can use –

Vinegar and water spray

This is quite a basic solution for dealing with an ant infestation, but it can be very effective. You simply mix 50% water and 50% vinegar in a spray bottle and then spray where you see ants in your garden. The good thing about this solution is that it’s completely non-toxic, making it safe to use around pets and children. It’s also very cheap and easy to make.

Essential oil spray

Another homemade spray solution you can use for dealing with ants is using essential oils. Most work well, including peppermint oil, tea tree oil and clove essential oil. You simply mix 1 cup of water with around 40 drops of your oil and then spray anywhere you see ants, including entryways. This is another solution that’s cheap and easy to make but can be very effective.

Although sprays can be good for dealing with ants you can see, they’re not particularly effective at removing them all. A better solution, therefore, would be to use traps.

Generally, homemade traps for dealing with unwanted ants will consist of two parts – something sweet to initially attract them and the killer ingredient.

Below are some very effective traps you can make using household ingredients –

Sugar liquid and Boric acid ant trap

Boric acid is a very effective ant killer and combining it with liquid sugar should provide a very effective trap for ants in your garden. Although boric acid is generally safe, it can be harmful to pets so this is something you should be aware of if you have cats or dogs that roam in your garden.

To make the trap you simply mix half a cup of water with one cup of liquid sugar. Then add one tablespoon of boric acid. You should pour the solution into a plastic container and then put holes near the bottom so the ants can crawl into it.

If you want to attract ants to the trap more effectively then you can also place regular sugar around it.

Borax and sugar cotton balls

Although using the liquid sugar with borax trap can be effective, it’s not the only way to deal with ants. If you prefer, you can use cotton balls with Borax instead. To make this trap you simply mix one cup of boiled water with one cup of sugar and then add two tablespoons of Borax.

You then take a cotton ball and soak it in the solution. Do this as many times as you need to create the appropriate number of traps and then strategically place them where you’ve seen ants, including any holes.

Baking soda and powdered sugar

This solution is incredibly easy to make but can still be very effective for getting rid of ants in your garden. All you need to do is mix powdered sugar with baking soda at a ratio of roughly 70/30. Baking soda is very deadly to ants and mixing it with powdered sugar will help to attract them to it in the first place.

Once you’ve mixed the two together, you simply need to sprinkle it in any areas in your garden where you’ve noticed ants.
